✓ Answer

A go-to-market (GTM) strategy should define the target customer, the positioning, pricing and packaging, the sales motion, the channels to reach buyers, the launch or growth plan and the metrics you will review. Decide them in that order, because each one depends on the one before. Keep it on one page so sales, marketing and product use the same version.

GTM vs a marketing plan

GTM covers how the whole company wins customers: product, pricing, sales and marketing. A marketing plan is the marketing part of it. If the GTM decisions are missing, the marketing plan has to guess.

Plan for how buyers buy now

Gartner's 2026 research found 67% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free experience but 69% still want to validate AI-generated insights with a rep. Most B2B GTM now needs a strong self-serve path and fast access to a person.

Watch out for
  • Channels chosen before the customer is clear.
  • Pricing left until after launch.
  • Sales and marketing working from different versions.
  • A 50-page GTM deck nobody updates.
  • No metrics agreed in advance.
Good signs
  • One page, shared by every team.
  • Decisions made in order: customer first.
  • A clear sales motion for each segment.
  • A 90-day plan with owners.
  • Metrics reviewed monthly.

The CEO, with marketing, sales and product leaders contributing their parts.

How often should we update it?

Review quarterly. Change it when a segment, price or channel result says you should.
