Should I hire marketing help on Upwork?
We've seen how businesses use Upwork to find marketing talent, and where the platform works well or falls short. Here's our take.
- Is Upwork good for marketing?
- Can I find a fractional CMO on Upwork?
- How do I avoid bad freelancers?
Freelance platforms such as Upwork work well for marketing tasks you can define clearly: a landing page, an ad account audit, a set of articles or a campaign build. They work less well when you need someone to decide what marketing should do, because that needs context and ongoing ownership. The quality of your brief decides most of the result.
ShoutEx takes on some client work through Upwork, so we have a stake in this answer. Our view is the same either way: platforms suit defined work best.
When a platform fits
Use one when you can write down the deliverable, the deadline and how you will judge it. Specialist tasks, such as tracking setup, design or a technical SEO review, are good examples. Upwork's help centre lists a client marketplace fee of up to 7.99% on payments, with a lower rate for some US clients paying by bank, so include that in your budget.
What to check in a profile
Look for completed jobs similar to yours, reviews that describe outcomes rather than friendliness, and examples you can open. Run a short paid first task before a larger contract.
How to brief well
Include your customer, the goal, examples you like, constraints, access you will give and how you will measure success. Freelancers can't fill gaps in strategy, so if you can't write the brief, start with someone who can help you write it.
- A vague brief asking for “marketing help.”
- Strategy hired by the hour with no ownership.
- No paid test task before a large contract.
- Sharing admin access to every account on day one.
- Reviews that praise speed but never mention results.
- A defined deliverable and deadline.
- A short paid first task.
- Relevant examples you can review.
- Access limited to what the task needs.
- Someone on your side who owns the priorities.
What founders and researchers say
We read the threads, surveys and reports so you don't have to. Each card is our summary, linked to the source.
Founder experiences with marketing freelancers vary widely. The ones that worked had a clear brief and a small first task; the ones that failed asked a freelancer to figure out the strategy.
Browse the threads →A full-time marketing specialist earned a median $78,760 in the US. Freelance work makes sense when you need specific skills for a set period rather than a full role.
