✓ Answer

Going into 2027, most fractional CMOs in North America charge between $5,000 and $15,000 a month on retainer, based on the latest published surveys from 2024 to 2026. Published ranges run from about $4,000 to $25,000. The price follows committed time and responsibility: an advisor at 4 to 6 hours a week sits at the low end, while someone who leads a team and owns pipeline targets two days a week sits at the top.

What the published data says

The FRAK State of Fractional Industry Report, a 2024 survey of 250 US fractional professionals, found 29.5% charge under $5,000 a month, 40% charge $5,000 to $8,000, 18.5% charge $8,000 to $10,000 and 12% charge more than $10,000. The 2026 Fractional Work Report (546 respondents) put the mean hourly rate for fractional marketing leaders at $209, and found 46% bill mainly on a monthly retainer.

What to plan for in 2027

Marketing budgets are flat going into the new year. Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey put marketing at 7.8% of company revenue, up only from 7.7%, and 56% of CMOs said they lacked the budget to deliver their plan. In that setting we expect founders to negotiate harder on scope and outcomes than on rate, so write the first 90 days of deliverables into the contract and review the retainer every quarter.

How it compares with a full-time hire

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for marketing managers at $166,790 (May 2025), and a startup CMO costs more once you add equity, benefits and a recruiting fee. A $10,000 retainer is $120,000 a year, but it buys a fraction of the time. Compare cost per decision owned, not cost per hour.

How we look at it at ShoutEx

We don't publish a standard price, because a seed-stage company fixing its positioning and a Series B company rebuilding its team need different amounts of senior time. Before any quote, ask what the retainer produces in the first 90 days: a written ICP, a positioning statement the sales team uses, a channel plan with test budgets and a recommendation on who to hire next. If a quote can't name those, the price is not the real problem.

Budget the leadership retainer separately from execution. Ad spend, writers, designers and tools sit on top, and most early-stage plans underestimate them.

Watch out for
  • Hourly billing with no defined outcome for the first 90 days.
  • Execution bundled into the retainer so you can't see how much senior time you buy.
  • A strategy deck with no owner for what happens after it is presented.
  • 6 to 12 month lock-ins signed before any diagnosis of what is broken.
  • A title without an operating history. Ask what pipeline they personally built and at what stage.
  • Equity in place of cash without running the dilution math first.
Good signs
  • A written 30, 60 and 90-day plan with named deliverables before you sign.
  • Leadership time and execution budget shown as separate lines.
  • Short terms after a first period, such as 90-day renewals.
  • Reports on pipeline and CAC, not on activity counts.
  • Plans their own exit by helping you hire a full-time marketing lead.
  • Has worked at your stage and sales motion, product-led or sales-led.

Redditr/startups and r/SaaS

A recurring complaint in founder threads: a senior name delivers a long strategy deck, bills a few hours a week and pipeline does not move. Founders who report good results describe a weekly working cadence and one named KPI the fractional CMO owns.

People describing themselves as fractional leaders on LinkedIn grew from about 2,000 in 2022 to more than 110,000 in early 2024. More supply means a wider spread in quality, so the interview matters more than the title.

Follow-up questions

How many hours a week does a fractional CMO work?

Most work 4 to 20 hours a week for one client. Under 4 hours is advice rather than leadership, and more than 2 days a week is closer to an interim CMO.

Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time CMO?

In cash, yes. A $10,000 monthly retainer is $120,000 a year with no recruiting fee or severance. You also get fewer hours, so it fits when you need senior decisions more than daily management.

Can I pay a fractional CMO in equity?

Some accept a lower retainer plus equity. Run the dilution math first, because half a point of a company that grows can cost far more than the cash you saved.

How long does a fractional CMO engagement last?

We plan for at least two quarters. Positioning changes and channel tests need that long to show results you can trust.
