How do I turn a free security assessment into a paid engagement?
Free assessments bring meetings. Without structure, they also give away your best work.
- Our free assessments don't convert. Why?
- How much should we give away?
- What should the report include?
Keep the free assessment narrow and fast, such as an external attack surface review or a short policy gap check, then present the findings in a meeting with a clear, priced plan to fix them. Give options at two or three levels, follow up automatically with a summary the buyer can share and set a date for a decision. Don't hand over a full report without a conversation.
Design the free offer
- Fixed scope that takes hours, not days.
- Findings that show risk in business terms.
- A presentation call, not just a PDF.
- A clear, priced next step.
After the call
Send a short summary of the top findings, the recommended plan and two or three options. Automation can send it the same day, remind the buyer before the proposal expires and alert you if they open it several times. See follow-up sequences.
Know when to stop giving
If a prospect keeps asking for more free work, they're probably not a buyer yet. Set a limit and stick to it.

What buyers and practitioners say
Here is what MSP and security owners say.
MSP owners debate free assessments. Those who convert well keep them narrow and always present the results in person.
Browse the threads →Practitioners discuss free scans and what prospects actually value, usually context and priorities over raw findings.
Browse the threads →Validation is a buying job of its own, and a well-run assessment gives buyers the evidence they need.
Read Gartner's research →Community summaries describe recurring themes in public threads, not individual posts. Vendor pages describe vendor claims, so test them on your own calls.

Should we charge a small fee instead?
A low fee often improves commitment. Some firms credit it against the full engagement.
Can we automate the assessment itself?
Parts of it, such as external scans. The interpretation and presentation should stay with a person.
How long should the free assessment take?
Short enough that you can afford to do it for prospects who don't buy.
